NMHA Board of Directors
The Navesink Maritime Heritage Association's day to day operations take place
through the Board of Trustees. The Board of Trustees includes the officers and
trustees and meets every friday morning from 730 to 830. The board meetings are
generally open to members, and members can contact any of the board members if
they are interested in attending.
Charles Ladoulis, President
In real life Charles Ladoulis is a semi retired medical doctor, who moved to the
area in 1997. Charles' medical career has been a combination of practice,
research, education and teaching facility management. One of his prime
motivations for moving to the Navesink area was the physical beauty of the
Navesink River and its unique interaction of heavily urbanized areas, parks,
tidal ecology and historical significance. He immediately joined Monmouth Boat
Club and became active in community outreach, which led to Charles' leadership
in founding NMHA. His specific interests are sailing, wooden boat construction
and community outreach.
Rik van Hemmen, Vice President
Rik van Hemmen, is Vice President of Martin, Ottaway, van Hemmen & Dolan, Inc.,
a Red Bank based maritime engineering firm that specializes in the technical,
economic and operational resolution of marine disasters on a world wide basis.
Rik is a third generation maritime engineer whose family moved to the Navesink
area in 1976. Rik has designed, built and sailed small craft all his life and
through his business is deeply involved in environmental issues. Mr. van
Hemmen's special interests are educational methods, man/nature interaction and
sustainable design.
Gayle Horvath, Secretary
Gayle Horvath moved to the area in 1990. Ms. Horvath is a freelance
technical writer and educational consultant. As a former mathematics and
computer science teacher, she has a deep interest in education and
educational techniques, and was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Red
Bank Charter School and was a founding member of NMHA. Gayle's specific
interests are wooden boat construction as a teaching tool, educational
opportunities for children and adults, history and community outreach.
Pat Treacy, Treasurer
Pat Treacy, is a long time area resident and is recently retired from the New
Jersey Marine Sciences Consortium at Sandy Hook. Pat is now continuing her
environmental involvement at NMHA. Her specific interests are outreach and
history.
Vincent Cambell, Trustee
Vince Campbell, native of Staten Island, former marine: 1958..1964,
forty two year member of local one elevator constructors union,
resident of River Plaza since 1974, working on wooden boats since
1952.
Tom Gibson, Trustee
Tom Gibson is a retired Bell Labs engineer and independent software consultant who has
lived in the area since 1962. He learned sailing racing a Jet 14 on the Navesink River.
Tom has been associated with the Clearwater
organization for many years and is a skipper of the "Adam Hyler", a
traditional clamming garvey that is operated as a historical vessel on the
Navesink river. Tom's specific interests are traditional craft operation, boat
building and environmental awareness. Tom also does this website.
Robert Nogueira, Trustee
Bob Nogueira is a US Coast Guard veteran and a long time resident of the
Navesink river watershed. Bob is an engineer by undergraduate training, but
became an educator in 1965, when he became the electronics instructor at Red
Bank Regional High School. During his tenure at Red Bank Regional High School he
earned a doctorate at Rutgers and rose to become Principal of the school. In
1998, at the time of his retirement, Red Bank Regional High School had become
one of the most innovative and highly regarded high schools in the state. Bob
has continued to stay active in education and was a major force in the
establishment of the Red Bank Charter School in 1997. Bob's specific interests
are fine woodworking, antique clock repair, educational outreach and area
history.
Walt Treacy, Trustee
Walt Treacy is the industrial arts instructor at Rumson Country Day School in
Rumson, NJ. Walt was born and raised in the area and has deep ties and
involvement with the Navesink River communities. Walt's special interest is the
relationship between theoretical and practical training and education. He tests
this relationship both at Rumson Country Day and in the various NMHA programs,
but also just likes to build things with kids.
Ken Jewell, Trustee
A co-founder of the Navesink Maritime Heritage Association, Ken has a
variety of artistic and educational interests.
He is a charter member of the "Barnburners" playing
backup Celtic Guitar, Mandolin and Banjo in the NJ area for the past 15
years and co-hosts 90.5 FM The Night's Bluegrass Jam on Sundays 9am - 11pm.
He's currently building a carved Lloyd Loar Gibson F5 Mandolin which he
hopes to be playing in a few months.
He teaches banjo, and counsels the Wood
Carving Merit Badge for the Scouts. "Teaching is a two way street and
an activity which I get just as much of enjoyment out of as my students
