Remembering Henk van Hemmen (1932-2010)

On March 3, 2010 we lost one of our close friends, Henk van Hemmen.

Henk and his wife Trudy were amongst our earliest members and supported NMHA both financially and by assisting us with all our activities.

Over the years Henk enjoyed participating in the Wooden Boat Fest and helped build countless boats and hundreds of paddles with kids of all ages. He particularly enjoyed working with at-risk youth at these events, knowing that being able to build a boat can be a deeply meaningful first step for young adults to realize that control of one's destiny is dependent on skills. He deeply believed that confidence in one's ability to acquire new skills will make the difference in one's life.

His unique seaman-like style as a teacher and his ability to interact with kids of all ages will be greatly missed.

For donations to NMHA in Henk's memory please go to the paypal button at the bottom of this page or mail your donation to Navesink Maritime Heritage Association, P.O. Box 6498, Fair Haven, NJ 07704.

Your donations are tax deductible and will be used in direct support of NMHA's community programs.

Navesink Maritime Heritage Association presents:

THE SHOP

NMHA has rented space for an operating base and now has its equipment and projects under one roof at 176 West Front Street in the Red Bank antique district. We've already done a fair amount of work at making this an efficient and hospitable space for our members and hope you come to check it out.

Member and friends are invited to join in for our Tuesday night work parties between 6:30 and about 9:30 pm.

And with work parties we mean a little project work and just plain fun good company.

The Jet 14 has been moved to the Shop and we will work on it usually on Saturdays. Call 732-291-9446 to check on this schedule if you're interested in helping out.

The power of your donation

NMHA has started its first fundraising campaign to allow investment into our future. These funds will be applied towards the construction of our activity center, our operations space rental and expansion of our programs. This will be a major fund raising campaign where we hope to obtain $30,000 before the end of the year for our shorter term needs and $300,000 in the longer term for our permanent activity center.

Be generous and support NMHA right now! It's easy with our PayPal link at the bottom of this page. Any amount, even a few dollars, will help us meet our goal of providing lasting support of our river, the surrounding community and its heritage.

Jet 14 Restoration is near Sea-worthy.

A cold molded mahogany hull, patterned after the infamous Uffa Fox Alarm and International 14. Designed by Siddons & Sindle of Island Heights, NJ and built by Lars Olsen Boatworks of Middletown, NJ.

Join us in the restoration / refurbishment process any Saturday at the Shop in Red Bank; learn more about the construction and history of this classic 14' racing dinghy from the 1950's that originated on the Jersey shore.

NOTICE!

The boat recently raced in the Jet-14 Class Packanack Lake Regatta and 2009 District Championships held in Wayne, NJ. She finished 7th overall under various crews and extremely heavy winds. Photos are available at the Packanack 2009 Photo Gallery.
