The President’s End of Year Letter From Lynn Fylak, President Change rocked—but did not sink—the NMHA boat in 2025, and we head into 2026 with a clear course and renewed energy. Like many all volunteer nonprofi ts, Navesink Maritime Heritage Association experienced transitions, challenges, and meaningful progress this year. Through it all, our mission remained steady, and our community support continued to grow. I have been especially encouraged by the many new faces at our programs, the continued support of longtime and returning members through dues and donations, and the growing involvement of local businesses. Your engagement tells us that NMHA’s work resonates and matters. This year brought several Board transitions. In March, longtime President Rik van Hemmen stepped down from the Board after years of visionary leadership that expanded NMHA’s programming and reach. We’re grateful that Rik contin ues to advise our 250th anniversary planning and will serve as a guide for the Monmouth Magical History Tour anticipated in June 2026. Joe and Connie Cali Poutre also stepped down due to other commitments, though we’re happy to still see them attending events. In October, Trustee Steven Schwankert concluded his Board service following a well attended screening of The Six, a companion to his book. We look forward to sharing his future maritime research projects. We were pleased to welcome Philip Silva, Ph.D., to the Board in late summer. Philip brings deep experience in environmental advocacy, nonprofit leadership, and cross-sector partnerships. His background strengthens NMHA’s environmental programming and adds valuable energy to our Board. Support from local businesses and grant partners expanded this year. Sponsorships, matching gifts, in-kind donations, and grants from the Monmouth County Historical Commission and Monmouth Arts helped sustain our programs and operations. These partnerships allow us to get more people on the water and deepen community connections. I am deeply grateful for the dedication and steady leadership that carried NMHA through a year of change and growth. Our Trustees’ commitment powers every thing we do—from programs and preservation, to finances, communications, and community connections. Michael Humphreys, our longest serving board member, goes far beyond his role as Secretary, keeping NMHA organized, responsive, and connected. Alongside Chuck Abel, he devotes weeks each summer to ensuring River Rangers is safe, educational, and fun, while Chuck also continues hands on preservation work at Grover House. Mary Gerdes keeps NMHA in strong financial standing as Treasurer and brings creativity and joy to our work through initiatives like the Evergreen Swag workshop, informed by her long connection to our youth programs. Bob Markoff leads Membership with care and skill, strengthening re lationships across the community and capturing memorable moments from our events. Together, their time, talent, and enthusiasm—supported by our members, volunteers, partners, and sponsors—make NMHA stronger and position us well for an exciting 2026. Thank you for being part of our journey. Lynn Fylak, President |
